Asin Thottumkal asserted May 17 Movement, a group for Sri Lankan TamilsAsin Thottumkal asserted May 17 Movement, a group for Sri Lankan Tamils: Ten people turned blind after receiving eye treatment in camps organised in Jaffna by actress Asin, claimed May 17 Movement, a group for Sri Lankan Tamils. It has thus asked Asin to stop associating herself with philanthropic activities in the island country and to offer an explanation on what caused blindness in those affected.

Asin had visited Sri Lanka for shooting a Hindi film ‘Ready’ in July this year and had been to Jaffna and Vavuniya along with Sri Lankan First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.

Asin conducted an eye camp there and had announced that she would cover 10,000 Lankan Tamils through subsequent efforts.

The convener of the May 17 Movement, Thirumurugan, at a press briefing held on Thursday, while questioning the motives for the actress in organising such an eye camp, said that her collaborations with the Sri Lankan government were of suspicious nature.

He also asked as to how Asin had been given access to rehabilitation camps in Jaffna, a region inaccessible even to International NGOs and UN bodies.

Criticising Asin’s decision to visit Sri Lanka for the shoot of her Hindi film, Thirumurugan has appealed to the Tamil Film Chamber of Commerce to ensure that her films do not get released in the State.

The Tamil film industry had jointly made a statement that the films of actors who visited the island nation for shooting purposes, would not be released in South India. Earlier this month in Mettupalayam, a pro-Tamil outfit protested against the actress for visiting Sri Lanka. Asin had gone to Mettupalayam for shooting of a Tamil film, ‘Kaavalan’, with actor Vijay.

Similar protests should be organised against the release of Suriya’s 'Raktha Charithra', as it features Vivek Oberoi, who participated at the International Indian Film Academy Awards in Sri Lanka this year, he said.
